Artist's Description
This painting features a background of soft, muted greens with whimsical Greek patterns. It has images of three men of varying ethnicity inset and painted realistically. The patterns emphasize the flatness of the painting which really makes the realistically modelled faces seem to extend out from it, thus the title.
This painting is part of my "Quilt Series" in which I strive to incorporate my signature, portraiture technique of building up layers of luminous color to create faces that seem to pulse with life and arranging them in a abstract format, rather like a quilt. Drawing from the past my love of pattern, both in rhythmic repetitions of simple shapes and in formal patterns of textiles and pottery. I am creating pieces that whisper of origins, oneness and hope.
About Heidi E Nelson
Heidi E. Nelson has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in oil painting and pursued a fine art career in the Louisville/Cincinnati area, while working in graphic design to make a living. Gradually she focused more on pursuing a free-lance commercial illustration business. Upon moving back to Minnesota in 1994, she shifted focus while staying home to raise two young daughters; there she again started fine art painting for herself, painting from pictures of her beloved girls in watercolor. She has been seriously teaching in numerous venues in the Twin Cities since 2000, teaching drawing and painting in all mediums to students of all ages and abilities, with a talent for teaching beginning classes in a methodical step-by-step way.
